Pre-Award Services
The College of Liberal Arts supports its faculty in seeking funding opportunities and preparing funding applications.
List of Pre-Award Support Services for Liberal Arts Faculty:
Types of Funding
There are various types of faculty and graduate student funding available.
External Funding for Faculty
Contract
A mechanism for procurement of a product or service with specific obligations for both sponsor and recipient. Typically, a research topic and the methods for conducting the research are specified in detail by the sponsor, although some sponsors award contracts in response to unsolicited proposals.
Cooperative Agreement
An award similar to a grant, but in which the sponsor's staff may be actively involved in proposal preparation, and anticipates having substantial involvement in research activities once the award has been made.
Fellowships
A fellowship grant is generally an amount paid or allowed to an individual for the purpose of study or research.
Grants
A type of financial assistance awarded to an organization for the conduct of research or other program as specified in an approved proposal. A grant, as opposed to a cooperative agreement, is used whenever the awarding office anticipates no substantial programmatic involvement with the recipient during the performance of the activities. There are government grants at the federal and state levels, and foundation grants that are offered by many non-profit organizations.
Limited Submissions
Limited submission funding opportunities refer to those solicitations that limit the number of proposals an organization can submit for consideration. If there is more than one principal investigator interested in submitting a proposal to a limited submission solicitation, the Strategic Research Initiatives(SRI) will review all potential submissions and determine which proposal(s) will be selected to be officially submitted to the sponsor.
Internal Funding for Faculty
To learn about various internal funding opportunities, including the Research Enhancement Program (REP), the Multi-disciplinary Internal Research Grant (MIRG) Program, the Merrick Awards, or the Albert B. Alkek Library's Research Grants, please visit the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
