Program Director
Dr. Goldstone is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of African American Studies. Originally from Moline, Illinois (home of the John Deere Tractor), Dr. Goldstone holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from the University of Iowa, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Before becoming a college professor, Dr. Goldstone taught high school English, coached 9th-grade girls' basketball, and boys' and girls' high school track.
Her book, Integrating the Forty Acres: The Fifty-Year Struggle for Racial Integration at the University of Texas (University of Georgia Press 2006), won the Coral H. Tullis Memorial Prize for the best book on Texas history. Her editorial on the University of Texas’s school song, “The Eyes of Texas,” can be found here. Dr. Goldstone is currently working on a book—tentatively titled “Strong, Black, Bitter, and Cold”—which is a collection of essays about African American life and culture.
In her spare time Dr. Goldstone trains for half marathons, does CrossFit, and spends lots of time walking her four dogs—Lena Horne, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, and Ralph Ellison. She also loves to watch Judge Judy!
